The stands were dead silent and tensions rose as everyone focused on the pitch. Suddenly, the crowd erupted into cheers as the ball hit the back of the net. As the team broke out into celebration, head coach Trey Pearce felt like he was seeing stars.
“It was just like things like crossing over my vision and had to reset for a moment,” Pearce said.
The girls varsity soccer team won the Bi-District Championship in a first round game against Arlington Martin High School.
While they fell in the second round to Flower Mound, the team had 13 seniors who played beyond the end of the regular season every year of their high school career – a school record.
Varsity goalkeeper Helena Caldero said winning the championship was something the entire team could share and celebrate because they worked so hard for it.
“It was probably the most happy I’ve been after a win,” Caldero said. “It’s not only me, but the whole team.”
Caldero was named “Player of the Match” after making ten saves during the game. Pearce said her growth as soccer player has been impressive.
“She was incredible and Helena Caldero deserves a ton of credit,” he said.
Sophomore Rachel Lawless scored the winning point for the team with less than 20 minutes to go in the game.
“It gives us more confidence leading into the next game, because people were predicting that we weren’t going to be able to win, but we were,” Lawless said.
Hoisting the district trophy with her teammates, senior Winnie Goodson thought about how happy she was that everyone got to experience the win, and how much it meant to the seniors.
“I think it helped us realize that we really could accomplish anything if we put our minds to it – If we put the work in – that any accomplishment was reachable,” she said.
