After the game, Head Coach Kelly Dansby felt numb and overwhelmed with joy and the feeling of accomplishment. She felt a sense of pride for her team, her colleagues and the community.
Dansby achieved her 200th career win against Nimitz High School as a varsity head coach after 16 years of coaching.
“My first win was a little more thrilling,” Dansby said. “I guess you could say as a new head coach, my first win was exciting over the top, a feeling I’ll never forget.”
Dansby said she was grateful that she could share the moment with the team, coaches and community she loves the most.
“Just to be able to share it with this team, staff, and community – its just a privilege to be able to coach these girls,” Dansby said.
She said being able to expand this program into something bigger is what inspires her to keep going.
“I do this for our girls and our community,” Dansby said. “To help spread this program around the school and west and west wood to get it the recognition it deserves.”
To achieve this many wins, Dansby sets goals every season as a team in hopes they go beyond the goal they set for themselves.
“The process of going beyond the goal you set for yourself is my moto for the girls in this program,” Dansby said.
Senior varsity player Alana Lair said she’s proud of her coach and to grow with her in this program is something she’s proud of.
“Coach Dansby inspires her team no matter what,” Lair said. “She’s grown not only as a coach but as a person. I’m glad I got to see her journey.”
Assistant coach Alexandria Howze said she looks up to Dansby and works to learn as much as she can from her.
“It’s very inspiring to be a part of her 200th win and to see her heart and dedication poured in to every game,” Howze said. “She is dedicated, structured, invested in her athletes and staff, she cares for her program. I am grateful to learn from her philosophy.”
