Senior Jackson Townsend was changing in the locker room when football coach Jason Gunter announced that Townsend was named the TXA 21/Children’s Medical Center High School Player of the Week.
“The coaches were very pleased with me, very proud of me and enthusiastic,” Townsend said. “They were all happy, I was happy – it was just a great time for all of us. I felt great. I felt accomplished.”
On Twitter, TXA 21/Children’s Hospital player of the week informed Townsend of his nomination. Over the next week, Townsend asked his friends to vote.
TXA 21 notified the coaches by email and told them Townsend had won the most votes among all five nominees. On Wednesday night, TXA 21 highlighted Townsend’s high school career.
“Jackson currently leads our team in all defensive statistical categories, but more importantly, he leads our team by exemplary example on a daily basis: his academics, attitude and work ethic are all stellar,” Gunter said. “He is an outstanding kid who is deserving of recognition.”
During that week, Townsend, who plays outside linebacker, wide receiver and strong safety, had six tackles, one interception for a touchdown and one sac in the game against Wylie.
“It was a great game even though we didn’t come out with a win,” Townsend said. “I was just very enthusiastic. It was a great experience, and I was glad to be nominated.”
Townsend says he looks forward to his last year of playing football.
“As a football player, it’s been great so far,” Townsend said. “Even though the record isn’t the best yet, we’re looking for better to come. I love my teammates, we’re having a great time, and we bonded really well. I’m loving senior year – it’s been great.”
