Juniors spilled into the Eagle’s Nest during both lunches on Monday to vote in the senior class officers elections. After a long week of campaigning between diverse candidates, the student council tallied up the votes.
Walking to her fourth period class, junior Aisleen Menezes saw senior student council president Neha Bhura walk towards her with a slip in her hand. After some hesitation, Menezes unfolded the paper and learned that she was elected senior class president.
Next year’s senior class officers are:
Aisleen Menezes – Senior Class President
Juan Resendez – Senior Class Vice-President
Juliet Wallace – Senior Class Secretary
Katie Moen – Senior Class Treasurer
Miriam Lamoreux – Senior Class Historian
“It was a really tight election because there were so many fantastic candidates, and I didn’t expect so many people to run,” Menezes said. “I had to put a lot of energy into campaigning, and I think we had one of the biggest voter turnouts.”
The class officers plan on working on more than just prom next year. Menezes said she plans to provide more volunteer opportunities, hold activities that make college applications less stressful and organize fundraising events to lower prom ticket prices.
“I’m excited for senior year next year,” Menezes said. “I have plans beyond prom that will hopefully benefit the student body. I’m excited to plan lots of events and just make it a fantastic senior year.”
As the current school year ends and the transition begins, current senior class president Thabit Pulak advises the juniors to go beyond the basic duties as class officer.
“I am happy for Aisleen’s success in her campaign for class president,” Pulak said. “I’ve personally known Aisleen, and I know that she has all of the great qualities of a leader. My advice to her is to be someone who is easily approachable and listens to other people’s problems and concerns. I urge her to try to get to know as many people in the senior class as possible and step out of her comfort zone. It really opens your eyes to the amazing students that go to this school and the diverse experiences and skills everyone brings together.”
