Senior Brianna Edwards walked into her math class dressed in flag colors, blending into the blue, red and white being worn by her classmates. That was ‘Merica Monday, the first Homecoming spirit day of the week.
“My favorite day was ‘Merica Monday – it was just such a great day,” junior Levi Rolfe said. “Everyone came out and showed their spirit, and it was cool to see everyone in red, white and blue.”
Textbook Tuesday followed as students wore shorts up to their chests, inch-thick eyeglasses and properly tucked-in shirts. Hip-hop Wednesday swarmed the hallways with sagging jeans, extra large shirts and crooked hats.
Forgotten memories of the ‘70s, ’80s and ‘90s spilled into classrooms as students wore Michael Jackson leather suits and super afros on Throwback Thursday.
On, Friday, Homecoming day, students wore purple and gold or their Homecoming shirts to show support for the Richardson Eagle in their game against Sunset High School.
The pep rally on Friday morning included performances by the Eaglettes, the cheerleaders, The Desperados, the Step Team, the Eagle Guard and the Eagle Band.
“I thought it was a blast,” freshman band member James Adamson said. “It was so much fun to go out there and play.”
In addition, students saw a collaborated performance by the singing group Legacy and the dance team Hypematic. Both groups also performed individually.
The Eagle Band Drumline gave an energetic performance before a performance by violin, cello and percussion players of the orchestra. The orchestra played “I Will Survive” as students lit the flashlights of their smartphones and waved them with the music.
Finally, students from Bowie Elementary performed jump-rope routines with students using multiple ropes, sharing ropes and jumping on pogo sticks.
“I thought the pep rally was fun, we were really energetic and there was a lot of school pride,” sophomore Jake Shovlin said.
With Friday’s game against Sunset being Richardson’s Homecoming game, students will have early release at 2 p.m. in order to attend the school’s Parade at 4 p.m., followed by the football game at 7:30 p.m.
“I think our Eagles will win,” Tyrik Patterson said. “We’ve got it.”
Homecoming weekend will officially end after the dance on Saturday night.
“For homecoming, I plan to be safe, and have fun with my friends and girlfriend,” sophomore Daniel Contreras said.
