Senior Sarah Curran smiled giddily and clapped her hands as she put on black latex gloves and approached the table in the center of the room. She first picked up a human brain. Then a heart. Then a lung.
“Seeing all the human organs was fascinating,” senior Sarah Curran said. “I’ve always been interested in that kind of stuff and in a sick way it was kind of like a dream come true.”
A group of 30 AP Biology students took their annual field trip to UT Southwestern on November 15 and heard from speakers discussing various aspects of the science field.
“We’re lucky to have a connection to UT Southwestern,” AP Biology teacher Jeff Bivins said. “I like to take the students and show them the different fields of science, because it’s good to hear from doctors who have went or actual students currently going through medical school. I’d like to see my students willing to push through to this high level of education.”
The students heard from Dr. Rolf Brekken and Ryan Golden on the basis of angiogenesis and cancer treatment, as well as the application of science on animals for humans genetic research.
“Though I want to go into political science and business, I definitely saw the multitude of options I had if I ever did go into the medical field,” senior Yusof Nazari said. “Plus, the dried up uterus was a nice bonus to see.”
Another group of 30 students will take the same trip on November 29.
“I love seeing the drastic difference between normal lungs and a smoker’s lungs,” junior Kathan Travedi said. “It’s going to be cool see that and I ‘m looking forward to this trip.”
