The color changing spotlights flashed across the stage, electronic music filled the auditorium, a mini-mosh pit formed in the front – and it was only intermission.
Every year, the senior class officers host a talent show to show off the unique skills of the students. Senior Demir Candas and junior Garrett Alford closed out the first half of the show with live mixing and dancing.
“The best part was definitely hearing people call our names even before we started playing,” Candas said.
Freshman Danny Contreras said that being on stage was easier with the support of his brother and the other performers.
“It was really exciting and great,” Contreras said. “I practiced my dance a lot, but there was some improv mixed in there.”
Freshmen Ayub Jamshaid, Jacob Beller and sophomore Juan Galdamez teamed up to close out the show with a drumming trio featuring “Equinox” and “Cinema” by Skrillex and “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers.
“The most difficult thing for me was finding a time where we could all practice together,” Jamshaid said. “Moving the drum sets around was also a struggle, but we managed.”
Talent show sponsor Dean Oien tried to give motivation from backstage.
“I like Mr. Oien,” junior Garrett Alford said. “He was chipper and positive and he really improved my day.”
A crowd favorite was the Minority Brothers Crew, or MBC dance crew. The group even had an 11-year-old that performed with them in the show. Crew member Mikee Bonifacio said being on stage wasn’t exactly unnerving.
“There’s a lot of pressure, but it makes you want to do better,” Bonifacio said. “We had an audition for our World of Dance competition and she auditioned. The first time we saw her we noticed she had a lot of experience, and she was good.”
Charlie Contreras said that MBC had been looking forward to performing in the talent show.
“Everyone in the group enjoyed it and it was a great experience,” Charlie said.
