A group of students entered the stage dressed in formal black and a dead serious mind set. They sat down with their violins and violas on their laps, cellos between their legs, and basses in front of them as they awaited orchestra director Sara Long’s approach to the podium to wave her baton – the cue to start.
It was UIL, the moment that the orchestra had prepared for all year. This is where they proved themselves by winning sweepstakes for the first time in 13 years.
On March 8, 2011, the Varsity Chamber Orchestra travelled to Mesquite to compete at UIL.
Their performance consisted of three songs: Concerto Grosso, Souvenir De Porto Rico and Brevard Sketches, as well as a sight-read song.
The Chamber Orchestra received three “ones” in both the concert performance, and sight-read performance.
“I felt like we accomplished so much this year. They deserved to win sweepstakes considering the sound they have produced with their instruments. But there is always room to improve,” Assistant Director Cathy Wiechmann said.
The students say they have enjoyed the recognition their hard work has earned.
“This accomplishment has now gained our orchestra respect in the school and community. Everyone has congratulated us for our effort,” senior Orchestra member Greer Gregory said.
