After more than a dozen runners advanced to area, several track students qualified for state. The women’s team placed third overall at Regionals, and the men’s team placed sixth.
Placing second, junior LaTessa Johnson will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Senior Milan Fisher placed second in the 400-meter dash, and sophomore Khalil Lacy placed second in the 200-meter dash.
“I’m just working hard, practicing day and night like a champion,” Johnson said.
In the high jump, senior Max Estill placed third, while Lacy junior Phillip Green, senior Donte Luckett and senior Sterling Jones placed second as a team in the 4×100 relay. Sophomore Asia Abron placed second in the 4kg shot put.
“I didn’t make it to state,” Estill said. “But I put in a great effort that I can’t be disappointed about.”
During the district competition, Green beat the school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.11. The girls team placed first and the boys placed third.
“I’m ecstatic we were able to win the title of District Champs for the third year in a row,” senior Devinne Miller said. “Even though we had a smaller team compared to the other schools, it just displayed the heart and hard work of this team.”
Despite some injuries, the athletes were determined to compete and win.
“I pulled my hamstring on the day of finals and was unable to compete in a majority of my events,” Miller said. “I was very confident to make up for my injury.”
The results of the last track meet brings the team closer to winning State, but students said it will require much more practice.
“My performance was okay,” Estill said. “I jumped well and ran well, but there are a lot of improvements that I could use.”
