With a 29-7 record, the girls basketball team finished a long season after losing in the Regional Quarterfinal playoff game. Three games into the playoffs, the team missed by one point to Plano West 64-65.
“By far the hardest part of the season was losing by one point to Plano West to get kicked out of playoffs,” basketball coach Lauren Hardy said.
Nevertheless, Hardy said the team had a successful season – making it to the quarterfinal game and becoming District co-champions with an 11-1 record.
“This season was amazing,” senior center Rita Uwe said. “We started out strong and as the season went on we kept getting more and more excited about what was to come. And when playoffs started that didn’t change. We were ready to take anybody on and not even give them a chance to think they could beat us.”
The team of three sophomores, one junior and one senior won their two playoff games – 68-37 against Boyd and 70-42 against Rowlett.
“I think I’ll remember two moments the most – celebrating our first win over Skyline in the Allen Tournament, and celebrating our playoff wins versus McKinney Boyd and Rowlett in the locker room,” Hardy said. “Skyline brought in a large crowd and even their band, but the girls were fearless.”
Ranking 46th in state, the players said they are excited to build on this year’s accomplishments. Hardy said she has high expectations for next year’s team as they improve both individually and as a group.
“To new players I say – don’t be scared,” Uwe said. “The girls basketball team really is a family. We argue and fight but we always pull together because we really do love each other even if we don’t always say it. Just go in ready for anything and meet some great people.”
