As the cheerleaders flipped and cheered to “Don’t Stop Believing”, a video camera was trained on the Glee-themed Pep Rally to help RHS win $2,500 in the Ahead with Farmers Pep Rally Video Contest.
RHS competed against P.L. Dunbar High School, Lancaster High School, and Timber Creek High School. Students could vote online for their favorite video. The money was presented on September 25, during the Battle of the Bands event at Lancaster High School.
Principal Charles Pickitt already has plans for the prize money.
“The consensus is to have the money go to the cheerleaders for use with future pep rallies and other similar school events,” Pickitt said.
In addition to the money, a live radio remote broadcast on Radio Station 97.9FM KBFB will take place at the school, the date is pending.
There were many rumors that the Eagle Guard skit, in which the Eagle Guard boys wore thongs and Pearce cheerleader uniforms, had the school disqualified from the competition.
“It was a low point in the almost perfect pep rally,” Pickitt said. “We were able to edit it out of our tape so no problem there, but it was performed in front of all our guests, parents, past-alumni, superintendents, school board, and staff. On behalf of RHS, I was embarrassed.”
Although the skit was shocking, most students enjoyed the scandalous performance.
“The Eagle Guard skit was very funny, but also inappropriate and a little rude to Pearce – which is OK,” Sophomore Elizabeth Seitz said.
Junior Julia Sykora thought that the skit was in bad taste what with so many guests at the school that day.
“I personally thought that the Eagle Guard skit was really funny, but it’s for certain audiences. Definitely not something to do in certain company,” Sykora said.
Students say pep rallies help define the character of the school.
“The school should be known for it’s pep rallies – it better be. I get super excited on pep rally days,” Sykora said. “It’s way more than just getting out of class – it’s really fun. All of it is great. Seeing everyone so excited is very cool and it unifies the school.”
Pickitt says the credit should go to the students.
“I am very, very proud of the students of RHS because it is their spirit and cooperation that make our pep rallies possible and awesome,” Pickitt said.
Students look forward to future pep rallies after such a strong first one.
“I feel that it is the best time to be recognized. Last year the pep rallies were really great and this year they are going to be even better.” Seitz said.
