With two games left before the end of the season, the football team walks a fine line to make the playoffs. A loss this week, or the next, will end any hope for the post-season.
“If we were to lose this Friday, it would make it really, really difficult,” Coach Gunter said.
With a 2-3 record and 2 more games to go, the football team’s chances of reaching the playoffs seem slim. As a large school in district 9, the football team battles for the 3rd or 4th spot. After the loss to Skyline last Friday, the team has to clinch its last two games in district to secure its spot in the playoffs.
This Friday the football team plays Berkner, a familiar rival, but a loss to Berkner would bring an abrupt end to the season.
“Berkner has pretty good athletes, and their quarterback – he’s their best,” junior linebacker Westcott Condra said.
Currently, Skyline, with a 5-0 record, has secured a playoff spot. Jesuit, following Skyline with a 4-1 record, will secure a spot if they win their next game, or if Richardson lose this Friday. Since, J J Pearce and Lake Highlands both hold a 3-2 record, they will play each other this week, and the winner will move on to playoffs.
A win for Jesuit can help the team clinch a spot, but a loss for Richardson will make things tougher. Despite the current standings of other teams, Richardson coaches want to concentrate the team’s efforts on the last two games of the season to improve the team’s performance as whole.
“We are just practicing real hard because we really want to get to playoffs,” junior center Trevor Wolfe said.
Richardson will face Berkner before playing Jesuit next week, which will be another required win for a playoff spot. As the game day approaches this week, the coaches want to make every second of practice count.
“Berkner is a familiar opponent – we’ve played Berkner for a long time,” Coach Gunter said.
By beating the Rams last year, the Eagles moved on to playoffs against Allen. This year, the team hopes to repeat that defeat and add a second win to their record.
“We beat Berkner last year pretty soundly,” Gunter said. “Offensively and defensively they do a lot of the same things.”
The players are eager to defeat the Rams this Friday, senior night, which will be the last home game for non returning players.
“We know we can beat them,” senior running back Kendrick Igbinoba said. “54 to 24.”
