With baseball season around the corner the baseball field has been undergoing renovation. Construction of the new field, which started last summer, is estimated to be completed by early next year.
“I believe RISD baseball facilities were due for upgrades,” varsity baseball coach Mike Tovar said. “RHS and LHHS baseball fields are being improved now. Next year Berkner and J.J. Pearce will get a face-lift.”
Construction began last May at the end of the baseball season, and the field will reportedly be ready by February 2014 when baseball season starts. There are major and minor upgrades to the baseball field, as well as aesthetic changes that are meant contribute to the overall beauty of the field.
“The biggest and most noticeable change is the new outfield fence,” Tovar said. “The old chain-linked fence has been replaced with a bigger, nicer aluminum wall. The outfield playing surface has been leveled, a new sprinkler system has been installed, and the two old storage houses have been replaced with a bigger brick facility.”
Funds were made available through the 2012 RISD bond package, as well as fundraising efforts by the baseball booster club.
With four months until baseball season starts, the team said they are eager to play on a fresh field.
“The field looks better,” senior varsity baseball player Jacob Hose said. “Everyone wants to play on a field that looks nice.”
