Two rows of girls approached the line of scrimmage to run the play. Juniors were on defense, seniors on offense. Senior Katie Oehlerts bent over, readying the ball to hike to her quarterback Amanda Brown. She looked between her legs to make sure she was on aim. Amanda yelled “Seeeeeeet… HIKE,” and the ball was in play.
“I loved being center and at the start of every play,” Oehlerts said. “It was my first time playing powder puff, actually, and I had a lot of fun!”
The annual Powderpuff game was held at the Eagle-Mustang stadium on December 6. As a fundraiser for the Carousel of Roses committee, it is a reverse gender flag-football game where girls are the football players, football players are the coaches and other boys are cheerleaders/Eaglettes.
Underclassmen played against each other while the upperclassmen faced off. Freshman beat the sophomores 12-2 and the seniors beat the juniors 18-6.
“It was great playing the juniors,” senior wide-reciever Carson Zerwekh said. “I’m glad we beat them fair and square and that they played their hardest – it made the win even better.”
