Over the past three weeks, student council collected approximately 770 pounds of cans to donate to the North Texas Food Bank.
“I think it’s super impressive, because that’s a ton of food,” sophomore Miranda Moses said. “I’m glad our school is gnarly enough to do something like that to help other people.”
Student Council holds a can-drive annually and donates the food to families that cannot provide for themselves during the holidays.
“I expected a lot of cans originally, but seeing some classes not participate made me lose hope,” senior officer Ahnaf Arefin said. “Thankfully I was wrong and saw the massive amount of cans from several classes, teachers and principals. Seeing the massive turnaround really raised my spirits.”
The student council made this canned food drive a competition between classes to raise interest and awareness for their cause.
“The top two classes got a pizza party, but we didn’t want that to be the main incentive for this project,” senior officer Hugo Venegas said. “Instead we wanted people take action and just help out because they wanted to.”
Venegas was happy students were able to make an impact.
“I’m glad that we can help out families that don’t have the same resources that we have, and help bring joy to their holiday,” Venegas said. “The can-drive is a great way for the people of RHS to come together for a good cause and make an impact, no matter how small it is in someone’s life.”
Senior Tamer Elashyi said he was glad the school banded together to put on a can-drive.
“I think it is a good way to get kids active in helping out the needy and should be encouraged to do it on a daily basis,” Elashyi said.
