After the football team won the coin toss before their rival game against Pearce, the team decided to take the ball and go on offense and strike first. They did just that scoring a touchdown on their first possession and never looked back winning 64-6 on 681 yards of total offense.
Led by quarterback Lucas Sawyer’s 381 passing yards and five passing touchdowns, the Eagles were able to secure their second win of the season.
“We capitalized on that,” Head coach Kendrick Holloway said. “We just kept it going for the game.”
It was the first time since 2015 the Eagles beat the Mustangs, holding them to 195 yards. Next up will be Jesuit College Prep this Friday at Ranger Stadium.
Holloway said this win was “long overdue” for the program, school and community since it has been a lopsided rivalry.
Senior defensive end Jai’meon Winfield said they had one goal for the game – beat Pearce.
“Last year, we came up short, but this year we knew what to do,” Winfield said.
Junior offensive lineman Jayden Sunsin said it felt really bad not being able to beat Pearce last year.
“So this year we were like, it has to be our chance,” he said. “And it feels great.”
Defensive back coach Lee Asemota graduated from RHS in 2007 but wasn’t able to beat Pearce during his time on the team.
“I could not go to the grave without beating these guys,” Asemota said. “So I appreciate these guys getting it done for us.”
Assistant coach Connor Wenning went to Pearce and said they view this rivalry as something they should dominate.
“I’m pretty sure we showed them today that we’re going to have our trend of our own,” Wenning said.
Principal Chris Choat said while he knew it was going to be a good game, he did not expect such a complete blowout.
“To get what we got on the scoreboard tonight, it’s just icing on the cake,” Choat said.
Holloway said the win was a team effort, from the players to the coaching staff, and that they all worked hard to prepare for this game.
“It was a great program effort,” Holloway said.
On Monday, Holloway laid out the program’s history to the team and reminded them that it’s “us versus us.” He challenged the players to get better every single practice leading up to this game.
“I told our kids on Monday we got an opportunity to rewrite history,” Holloway said. “And let’s continue to write our own story for this 2025 football season.”
Choat said Holloway made the difference in today’s game because he is all about meeting the standard for the team. He said Holloway consistently shared that message every week for three years.
“Tonight, you see that pay off,” Choat said. “That is the standard you saw tonight.”
Wenning said the game doesn’t just end on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday the coaches are looking at what to improve.
“A win like this, you’ve got to critique it even more to where you can get better,” Wenning said.
Holloway said from every game, no matter if they win or lose, they find a lesson to build on. He said the lesson from this game was to stay disciplined and continue to play relentless throughout practice and games.
“Every minute counts,” Holloway said. “Every hour counts that we did in the weight room, in the film room, on the football field. We got to capitalize on all of that.”
Choat said this victory brings confidence for the team going into their next game against Jesuit.
“A game like this builds confidence more than you can ever measure or more than anybody can ever see,” Choat said.
Sunsin said this game gives them the motivation and momentum going into their next game and playoffs.
“I think it’s going to be great for us moving forward,” senior running back Dameon Crowe said.
