Decorated tables lined the back of the library showcasing an array of Career and Technical Education classes and organizations. As the crowd wandered in search of an eye-catching table to photograph and exchange for a slice of pizza from senior Dontarious Johnson (DJ), students and teachers could be overheard pitching their classes and clubs as the best choice.
As a member of the PTA Executive Board, DJ worked with PTA President Caroline Potter, along with Principal Chris Choat and Assistant Principal Bill Parker, to make the event happen.
DJ said he wants to teach students about all of the CTE courses and clubs so they can increase their chances of success after high school. With over 90 clubs and organizations offered, he said it can be difficult for students to know about all the opportunities that exist.
“My main goal here is just to get exposure to all these clubs and organizations – and all of the resources we have here,” he said.
One of CTE teacher Haley Crabtree’s courses, Interpersonal Studies, teaches students how to communicate and connect with others.
“My classes are a great option, but there are some really cool animal science courses and also some child development classes that seem really interesting as well,” Crabtree said.
Choat said that he was proud that a student like DJ took the initiative to plan what he called a really important event.
“Any time we get a student that plans something that tends to have more meaning, it fits the vision that we have,” Choat said. “If students are connected with something outside of the regular core, their chances of success increase tremendously.”
