The weather’s getting colder, the leaves are changing, and “Now Hiring” signs are popping up all over the place. Most high school students need extra money, whether for a car, college, or just some spending money.

There are only so many seasonal jobs up for grabs, so here are some tips and tricks to avoid being left out in the cold during this holiday season.

1) It’s not about what you know, it’s who you know. Don’t forget about your family members, friends and acquaintances who could help you snag your next gig.

2) Find a store that interests you. It’s important to find a place that matches your personality and fits what you like to do. You want an environment that you’ll feel comfortable and accepted in.

3) Have a resume ready with references, even when it’s not required. When applying for a job, you’re competing with every other person who is applying for that position as well. You want to stand out from the others.

4) No job experience? Don’t fret. That’s where your resume comes in. Find good templates and examples online, and make sure to include all your extracurricular school activities, along with any accomplishments which show your individuality and capability of being a reliable worker.

5) Many stores will have online applications, which may include personality surveys and questions to see if you’re a fit for the job. After the initial completion and submission, it’s a good idea to visit the store, meet the manager, and let them know about your application. This will leave a good impression, and help you to stand out in the crowd of applicants.

6) BE AVAILABLE. Companies are looking for individuals who have reliable transportation and are free weekdays and weekends. Potential employers want to know about your availability. Always, ALWAYS verify your schedule with your parents to make sure that you’ll be available for the hours that you write down.

Stores hire seasonally, but if you prove to be a positive addition to the store, you may be asked to stay as part of the permanent associate crew. Also, don’t get too bummed if you don’t get the first job where you apply. It can be all about luck and chance, so just keep a positive attitude, and everything will be a-ok!
