While the rest of the district is holding Richardson Read It Day on Thursday of next week, RHS will be celebrating today because of complications with an AVID program’s event being held on the same day in the library.
“People realize how important it is that everyone reads,” said Head Librarian Alice Dillon. “So they pick one day where everybody in the whole school reads the first 20 minutes of every period. It doesn’t matter if they read books, magazines, anything. It’s just to show how important it is to read.”
Janitorial staff, lunch servers, and other workers around the school won’t be able to read for the beginning of every class, as they have to work, but are still expected to read.
“I think it’s fantastic,” English teacher David Townsend said. “If you’re going to read literature, a really good book, you have to invest the time, you have to live with the book and give it time to work its magic.”
Richardson Read It Day gives students and RHS staff necessary time to really dive in to their books.
“It’s my favorite holiday after Christmas and Halloween,” junior Ashley Ubben says. “I love to read, and the fact that I don’t have to do school work to read recreationally is awesome.”
