Senior Maddie Barnett looked around the field ready to call the play. The seniors were down by 21 points and had only seven minutes left, but they weren’t going to finish the game without a fight. On the sidelines, boy cheerleaders were fumbling with their cheers, attempting to humor the crowd.
“I love going to the Powder Puff games,” senior Andrew Ly said. “Not for the game, obviously, but because I can always depend on it to make me laugh.”
Organized by the Carousel Committee, the Powder Puff game is the annual fundraising activity for the Carousel of Roses Dance.
“I came to game to cheer on the guys,” senior Lyna Nyugen said. “It’s really funny seeing them in the skirts, doing all of the cheerleading and making fools of themselves.”
For the first half, the sophomores played the freshman in a 28-2 blowout victory, with sophomores leading the majority of the game.
“We do this because we support the girls,” senior Powder Puff cheerleader Nick Igbinigie said. “It’s really fun to see them play, and it helps the Carousel Committee, so why not?”
Upperclassmen played each other for the second half of the game. The juniors played a dynamic game routing the seniors for the 5th year in a row 28-7.
“The girls really played poorly,” senior Abby Eason said. “They lacked any defense. It was a nice try, but there isn’t a next year for us. We’ve lost every single year.”
