The team huddled in the cold and carefully drew up the next play. They were up by 18 points but craved total domination. To the sideline, cheerleaders found their rhythm to One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.”
Minus the hairy legs dangling from the cheerleader skirts, and the pony tails flapping behind the football players, this game seemed like any other.
“It’s a new experience,” freshmen Shankar Lal said. “The girls aren’t really good at it, but it’s entertaining. I think next year will be better.”
Organized by the Carousel Committee, the Powder Puff flag football game is a fundraising activity for the Carousel of Roses dance.
For two quarters, the sophomores played the freshmen. On their way to a blowout victory, the sophomore team scored their last touchdown with three minutes left winning 30-0.
“My daughter is on the sophomore team” parent John Oehlerts said. “It’s sort of pitiful football, but it’s fun.”
The upperclassmen took the field for the second half. The seniors played a dynamic game, ending the third quarter up 18-0 en route to a 36-0 rout.
“I did it the last three years and I was really looking forward to do it as a senior,” Estonia Kersey-Otieno said. “My favorite moment was when I tackled a girl.”
