The same apprehension of watching the first few minutes of a horror movie sifted through the people shuffling through the auditorium doors, towards the eerie music echoing screams. Friends clung to each other or nervously laughed off their fear as they entered the fog-filled void.
Every year, Theatre Magnet students put on a haunted house, using the costumes and supplies of past shows. With phobias as a theme, the haunted house featured sections dedicated to some of the most common fears, like the fear of spiders and snakes. Students also created a section for eyeless baby dolls and another for zombies.
“It takes about ten minutes to walk through,” Theatre Magnet director Eric Archilla said. “Everyone did really great this year.”
Students worked the haunted house in costumes and stage makeup as attendees filtered through the auditorium entrance and towards the dungeon – the area under the stage. Strobe lights, fog machines and a scream track combined with dimmed lights to create a frightening atmosphere.
“It’s definitely scary,” sophomore Dovie Stem said. “I work in the doll part, and it’s really creepy to be there. Other parts are even worse, though – I can’t even go into the dungeon.”
Sophomore Dylan Kirk, who works in the spider section, said that it was scary in some parts.
“Some people even fell to the ground when I jumped out – It was great,” he said.
