Students cheered and screamed as master of ceremonies Owen Nesbitt announced the next performance. Like any other pep rally, students were encouraged to miss class to show their school pride. This year, however, the energy from the students was powered by the desire to crush J.J. Pearce – the rival school – for the fourth time in a row.
Cheer coach Jeff Bivins said everybody worked hard to get students pumped for the game.
“Cheerleaders have been working for two weeks on each routine, practicing from 4:30 p.m. to about 6:20 p.m. going through the stunts and the dances,” Bivins said.
Because this is J. J. Pearce’s Homecoming game, the Mustangs will sit on the home side of the stadium, while the Eagles try to beat them for the fourth year in a row.
“We have to win because it’s a tradition,” sophomore Destany Vines said. “If we don’t, it would be the biggest disappointment because this is one of the biggest events everyone looks forward to all year.”
