The Richardson Theatre Magnet presented “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales” on February 25.
The magnet’s sophomore class was split by class periods so that students could perform the shows back-to-back. Each role also had understudies in case of characters got sick, the play continues.
Sophomore Jacob Redman starred as the title character of Jack the Narrator from the fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Jack narrated the play as an argument between him and the other title character – Foxxy Loxxy.
“I really enjoyed playing Jack,” Redman said. “The play was a lot of fun.”
The show used sets and props from the magnet’s previous production “Shrek the Musical.” The show also utilized the new microphones that the auditorium received as part of recent renovations.
“I love the new microphones,” sophomore Sarah Anderson said. “They’re really easy to use and they make sure everyone can hear us.”
The show did have some hitches. Students missed some of their cues due to malfunctions. But the actors used skills they learned in class and improvised as tech students looked for solutions.
“There wasn’t the falling sound for the popcorn in one scene when the giant drops it,” Redman said. “So, I started improvising, but it got worked out pretty quickly.”
The two sophomore classes performed for over 900 elementary school kids from across the district. Many students thought the shows were a success.
“The show was cute,” Theatre Magnet senior Melody Iro said. “Perfect for the little kids because all the characters were familiar. I think they enjoyed it.”
